This month's item is a Whitney no. 5 metal punch, used for punching holes in sheet metal. The Whitney Metal Tool Co. (later known as Roper Whitney) was established in 1907 and is still in business today. If you're looking for a contemporary version, you'll be disappointed; the old and the new are virtually identical. This one is nearly 100 years old, evidenced by the severe pitting, particularly on the backside. We used citric acid to clean this one. For a closer look, click here.
