Cigar box lid holders enjoyed their greatest popularity in the 19th and
early 20th centuries. Their main purpose was to hold open the lids of
cigar boxes so patrons could see the cigars for sale. They came in a
variety of styles and sizes. (To see a 1921 patent of one, click here.)
During their popularity, you could find them in tobacco shops, general
stores, and taverns. However, as time wore on, it became evident there was a
better way to store cigars.
Eventually, cigar boxes - and the holders
used to prop them open - went by the wayside and humidors began their
reign. This one came from Boozen's Tap in central Illinois. It was left
behind
when the tavern was purchased by my husband's family. While these box
top holders created what seemed like an ideal situation for displaying
cigars, they exposed the cigars to air, which dried them out and caused
them to burn too quickly. Click here for a closer look.
