This month's mystery item is a can wrench. The origin of this unique tool traces back to the early 1950s, when the telecom industry kicked into high gear and new
installations exploded on the scene. To protect connections from the elements, curious animals, insects, and foul play, they
were terminated in service boxes that were protected by
a uniquely designed lock. The key to that lock was unique as well—secure from tampering and convenient for the technician using it. To enlarge the pic of this month's tool (restored), click here.
The use of can wrenches soon spread from the telecom industry to the security alarm and cable TV fields. The tool, which is insulated against electrical shock, contains a 7/16" hex socket on one end and a 3/8" hex socket on the other. Each socket has a thin wall to
allow the wrench to be used in tightly recessed areas.
