If you ever worked in a coal mine, you're familiar with this item. These boxes were used to carry individual sticks of dynamite into coal mines. Miners would take the number of sticks needed and carry them into the mine in a box like this one. The homemade hook on the back was so the box could be hooked to the miner's belt to free up his hands. Similar boxes were used to carry fuses or blasting caps, but a box this size was likely used to tote dynamite. The box kept the contents dry ~ and the miners safe!
